6 Verses: How Should Muslims Communicate with Friends of Other Faiths?

Greetings to everyone. I would like to begin by praising God, Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, and asking for His help and guidance. Today I would like to speak about the importance of positive communication with friends of other religions, a topic that is especially important in society today.

1. The importance of good communication:
Allah reminds us in the Qur’an to speak politely and justly. In Surah An-Nisa, God says, “and speak good words to people” (4:36). This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining polite and positive communication with everyone, regardless of their religion.

2. The role of patience and understanding:
In our communication, patience and understanding are essential. Surah Al-Baqarah says, “and be patient, for indeed Allah is with those who are patient” (2:153). Patience in communication helps build bridges and fosters mutual respect.

3. Avoiding disputes:
Allah instructs us to avoid unnecessary disputes. Surah Al-Ankabut says, “And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best” (29:46). Engaging in respectful dialogue rather than argument is key to positive communication.

4. Emphasizing common ground:
Focus on the values and beliefs we share. Surah Aal-e-Imran says, “Say, O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is just between us and you” (3:64). By emphasizing the principles we hold in common, we can strengthen our bonds and promote unity.

5. Displaying good character:
Our actions often speak louder than our words. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known for his excellent character. Surah Al-Ahzab says, “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example” (33:21). By following his example, we can communicate effectively and positively.

6. Inviting others to Islam with knowledge and wisdom:
When sharing our religion, it is important to do so with wisdom and good counsel. Allah says in Surah An-Nahl, “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best” (16:125). This approach ensures that our message is conveyed in the best possible way.

In closing, let us strive to communicate positively according to the principles that Allah and the Prophet have taught us: let us speak politely, be patient, avoid disputes, emphasize common ground, display good character, and invite others with wisdom.

May Allah guide us to be the best example of positive communication in our interactions with friends of other faiths. Ameen.

Closing du’a:
O Allah, we ask for guidance, patience, and wisdom in our communication. Help us to speak with good words, avoid disputes, and build bridges of mutual understanding and respect. Ameen.
