How to Convert to Islam: A Beginner’s Guide for New Muslims

Thinking about converting to Islam but not sure where to start? The good news: it is far simpler than most people expect — it takes only seconds, you can do it right now, anywhere. Whether you are here out of personal faith, out of love, or because you are about to marry a Muslim partner, ARAYA Nikah Social Enterprise warmly welcomes you and can support every step, gently and without pressure.

Converting to Islam — just one sentence

There are only 2 steps: (1) calm your mind and be aware of what you are about to say, and (2) recite the Declaration of Faith (Shahada) aloud.

“Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah”

“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger.”

Once you recite it sincerely — you are a Muslim.

Simpler than you think — what you do not need

Converting is a matter between you and Allah. To take the first step, you do not need:

  • No witnesses — you can recite it yourself
  • No documents — it is not a government procedure
  • No circumcision — it is not a condition for converting or for a nikah
  • No fee — you can do it for free, on your own
  • No special place or date — home, a mosque, anywhere, anytime

These only come into play when you want “documentation” or are preparing for marriage — explained just below.

If you want a certificate

You do not need a certificate to convert. But if you want “documentation” to use later — for example, to prepare for a nikah — there are 2 paths:

By yourselfFree
  • Anywhere, anytime
  • No certificate

A certificate can be issued once the learner is 20, or with a guardian’s consent (otherwise, use the by-yourself path) · Having a respected adult witness — someone the Muslim family knows — on the day makes the nikah go more smoothly.

Certificates issued by ARAYA Nikah Social Enterprise Co., Ltd. certify according to religious principles — they are not government documents and do not change your legal status; acceptance abroad is at the destination authority’s discretion.

After you convert — what next

Reciting the shahada is the beginning, not the end. What new Muslims usually think about next:

  • Keep learning — Islam is a lifelong journey. ARAYA’s Learning Islam & Shahada course covers the fundamentals in person, at your own pace, with no pressure.
  • Choosing a Muslim name — optional, not required. Read more (in Thai): how to choose a Muslim name and names and meanings.
  • Family & community — take it slowly; most families need time. Continuing to care for and respect your non-Muslim family is very much part of being a good Muslim.

Want guidance in person?

Reading the steps is one thing — having a teacher walk you through them, in a calm and respectful room, is another. ARAYA’s Learning Islam & Shahada course covers everything above in person, at your own pace, with a certificate of completion. Have questions first? Chat with ARAYA on WhatsApp (pricing and scheduling are shared during the consultation).

Converting to Islam and learning about Islam are two different things. Converting is a short, simple step — but learning is a lifelong journey. Best wishes to every new Muslim.

“We intend that ARAYA’s activities will help humanity live together peacefully and harmoniously, even across religious differences — supporting those interested in Islam to experience and learn about it without coercion or distress.”
