Picture this… a Muslim friend says, “Just a few more days until Eid!” and you think they mean Eat Day!… Hold on a second! It’s true that there’s a lot of food on Eid 🍗🍩🍛🍉
But “Eid” doesn’t mean “eat”! 😄
🕌 What is Eid?
The word Eid is Arabic, meaning “a festival that returns again” or “a day of celebration.”
In Islam there are two main Eid days:
- Eid al-Fitr – the celebration marking the end of the month of Ramadan (the month of fasting)
- Think of it as “graduation day from a mission of patience.”
- Muslims gather for prayer in the morning, wear new clothes, share food, and give gifts to each other 🎁
- Eid al-Adha – a day of sacrifice, coinciding with the pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah
- It recalls the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice for God
- Some Muslims slaughter an animal (such as a goat or cow) and share the meat with the poor, in remembrance of that sacrifice 🤝🐄
💫 So why does it matter?
- Eid isn’t just a holiday — it’s a day of mercy, love, and forgiveness
- It’s a day when everyone goes home, visits relatives, and shares with those who have less
- And of course… it’s a day when there really is delicious food all over the house (but it’s still not “Eat Day”!)
😄 Fun activities on Eid
- Going to Eid prayer together in the morning 🕌
- Eating special dishes made only for Eid, such as sweets from Indonesia, Turkey, or Thailand
- Children get “Eidi,” or Eid money, from the adults too 💸
- Dressing up nicely and taking family photos 👗🧥
🤝 So how do we wish our Muslim friends well?
It’s very simple!
Just say
“Eid Mubarak!”
Meaning “May your Eid be filled with happiness.”
